Locksmithing FAQ
Why should I use a professional locksmith company?
Skilled professional locksmiths bring experience and knowledge in lock, safe & security problems and are better prepared to solve security issues to your unique situation. A professional locksmith will provide you with options to suit your security needs and install products that are built to provide both quality and the proper protection.
What does rekeying a lock mean?
Re-keying means changing the pins in an existing lock so that only new keys can open it. Many people who use the same key that they received when they bought their home, have no idea of how many people such as tradesmen, neighbors and friends etc. of the previous owners still have access with that key. A professional locksmith can re-key your existing locks and give you peace of mind knowing only people you know will have a key to your home.
Safes FAQ
What is the difference between a Locksmith and a Safe Technician?
Most Locksmith experience is limited to door and car locks. A Safe Technician uses sophisticated tools and methods to overcome high security locks and systems. Safe Technicians attend schools and classes that teach the latest and least invasive opening methods. Almost all safes that are opened by a safe technician can be repaired and returned to working order.
What kind of safe should I buy?
This is determined by the value of the contents you are storing. The value of the contents will determine the type of safe you will need and your insurance carrier will advise you of the UL rating that your safe will require. If fire is your main concern, you would need a fire safe with a 1 or 2 hour fire rating.
Are all safes fireproof?
No, certain burglary rated safes are not fireproof. Safes are tested for fire or burglary or both. The safe will have labels designating their fire and burglary ratings.
What are UL ratings?
Underwriter Laboratories tests safes and assigns ratings to them. Your insurance carrier will require the safe to have a specific rating based on the contents of your safe. UL ratings are as follows:
- RSC – Tool Resistant 5 Minutes – Front Door Tested
- TL-15 – Tool Resistant 15 Minutes – Front Door Tested
- TL-30 – Tool Resistant 30 Minutes – Front Door Tested
- TL-30X6 – Tool Resistant 30 Minutes – All sides Tested
- TRTL-30X6 – Torch & Tool Resistant 30 Minutes – All Sides Tested
- TRTL-60X6 – Torch & Tool Resistant 60 Minutes – All Sides Tested
What is the difference between a digital and a mechanical lock?
A mechanical lock employs a 3 number dial that is turned to the opening combination. If the combination needs to be changed it must be done by a qualified technician. The digital lock employs a push button dial that uses a series of numbers to open the lock and is powered by batteries. The combination can be changed by the user. Generally digital locks are easier to use, open quicker, and allow user combo changes. Both are reliable options as financial institutions are now using both in their facilities.
Will a fire safe protect photographs and computer data?
No, a standard fire safe will protect paper products only. Due to the high heat and humidity of a normal fire, photos and data should be stored in a data safe that does not allow the interior temperature to exceed 125 degrees.
